Janet Fries is Of Counsel with Lutzker & Lutzker LLP, where her practice focuses on copyright law, trademark law and entertainment law. Janet has represented authors, artists, art collectors, estates of artists, art organizations, musicians, filmmakers and producers in connection with numerous issues, including contract negotiation and preparation, copyright and trademark protection and enforcement and related matters. She is a trained mediator and has settled disputes in all areas of copyright and trademark law.

Janet is a frequent lecturer and has published a number of articles on copyright and related topics. She is an active member of the American Bar Association IP Section, currently serving on the AI Task Force and the Copyright Reform Task Force. Janet is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and an Advisor to the American Law Institute (ALI) Restatement of the Law, Copyright Project. She serves as Vice President of the Board of the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts (WALA) and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Washington Sculptors Group. Janet is also a member of ArtTable and the Cosmos Club.

In addition to her legal practice, Janet is an experienced professional editorial and fine art photographer. She is a Contributing Photographer with Getty Images. Her work has been published and exhibited widely and has been acquired for the permanent collection of museums, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Oakland Museum of California and the Katzen Art Center. A collection of her portraits, shot on assignment for printed magazine publications between 1973 and 1991, was published in 2024 by Hemphill Artworks.
