In November 2023, OpenAI released custom versions of ChatGPT, called GPTs. Instead of keeping a list of carefully crafted prompts and instruction sets to copy and paste into ChatGPT, GPTs allow users (including those without any coding experience) to customize ChatGPT for a particular use. By the time the GPT Store officially opened on January 10, 2024, users had already created 3 million custom versions of ChatGPT. The GPT Store is currently available only to paying subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Team and Enterprise users. GPTs are searchable, and OpenAI highlights useful and impactful GPTs weekly inside the Store. As of January 16, 2024, the “Featured Curated top picks from this week” on the GPT Store included AllTrails, a GPT that finds hiking, biking or running trails; Consensus, an AI research assistant that will search more than 200 million academic papers to provide a “properly” cited answer with scientific backed support; Code Tutor, by education site Khan Academy, that will assist users in writing computer code, without providing them the actual code; and Books, an AI guide to help readers pick their next book based on their preferred interests and goals. Later this year, OpenAI will introduce a feature that will allow GPT builders to earn money based on how many people are using their GPT.

OpenAI also announced a new ChatGPT Team plan for companies and departments of any size. ChatGPT Team includes tools like DALL·E, GPT-4 with Vision, Browsing and Advanced Data Analysis with higher message caps, i.e., the number of input queries allowed within a certain timeframe. OpenAI promises not to train on business data or conversations of ChatGPT Enterprise and Team subscribers. Team customers will also have access to a private section of the GPT Store which includes GPTs published in the Team workspace. OpenAI is planning to add enhanced administrative controls for ChatGPT Enterprise customers that will allow them to choose how internal-only GPTs are shared and which external GPTs may be used inside the business.
