Royalties for Sound Recording Owners: The Reprise

First introduced in 2021, the American Music Fairness Act has recently been revived in Congress with bipartisan support. Currently, radio stations are not required to pay performance royalties for these broadcasts. However, this legislation seeks to ensure that the owners of sound recordings — performing artists, record labels, etc. — receive fair compensation through SoundExchange when their work is played on radio stations. Several iterations of this legislation have been attempted to no avail but with renewed bipartisan momentum, this bill reflects increasing recognition of the rights of performing artists.
