I am currently teaching an undergraduate course in Communications Law at American University. All of the students in my class are enrolled in the School of Communications, and the majority of them are interested in pursuing a career in media or the law after graduation. This course is designed to offer them a practical introduction to the U.S. legal system and to laws and current cases that affect communication in the media. Over the course of the semester we will explore the development of the law regarding the First Amendment and related legal areas such as tort law, intellectual property, government regulation of speech, press privileges, and the right and access to information. The students are bright and engaging, and I look forward to our lively class discussions on Monday nights.
