Carolyn Martin, Senior Counsel at Lutzker & Lutzker, was a panelist at American University Law Review’s spring symposium on February 9, 2024. This year’s symposium, which featured lawyers from around the country representing academia, private practice and government, focused on Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) and its impact on tort liability, plagiarism, copyright and professional ethics.
Carolyn’s presentation on copyright law addressed the pending litigation by musicians, authors, photographers, artists and news organizations challenging the use of their work to train large language models (LLMs) and the fair use defense to copyright infringement; the legal and practical issues of hybrid human/AI works; and how generative AI can support creatives, knowledge workers and educators. She was also asked to speak to the students about how Intellectual Property Management encompasses not only registrations, licensing and rights enforcement, but increasingly strategies for companies and nonprofits to leverage their IP to maximize nontraditional revenue streams, fulfill business objectives and grow their brands.
