Janet Fries Speaks on Legal Issues and Her Photographs

Since Janet Fries joined Lutzker & Lutzker as Of Counsel in July 2024, she has been a sought-after speaker both as a lawyer and a news photographer.

Currently Janet has 22 photographs on exhibit at the Cosmos Club, a Washington, D.C. social club providing intellectual fellowship since 1878. The exhibition began on September 6, 2024, and will continue through January 7, 2025. On September 23 Janet gave a presentation at the Cosmos Club about the photographs, which are portraits taken on assignment for various magazines and newspapers from 1973 through 1991, including images of authors Joan Didion, Alice Walker and Tom Clancy, and other personalities such as Jerry Garcia, cult leader Jim Jones, and Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.

On September 24 Janet was a guest speaker at Georgetown Law School where she spoke about recent court decisions applying copyright law, including cases involving music and the visual arts. Janet also provided an update on developments in Artificial Intelligence and its impact on copyright law.

Most recently, on November 17, Janet spoke at the Washington Conservation Guild conference, discussing various contract issues and the moral rights of attribution and integrity that living artists might assert against conservators.
